We often ask, “God, where are you”? If you’re a God of Love
why do you allow all of this to happen, especially to the innocent?
How long oh Lord must I call for help, why do you make me to look
at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrong? The wicked hem in the righteous,
so that justice is perverted. Habakkuk 1:1-4 (NIV).
It is 6:00 in the evening and we have just finished our evening meal and as
it digests we begin to take in the devastation of the world we live in as we
view the evening news. There are children killing each other, parents, or teachers;
domestic tragedy all around. There are politicians, debating our moral values
as a nation. There is starvation in our country as in foreign lands.
Habakkuk asked God why the people of Judah were not being punished for their
sin. He couldn’t understand why a just God would allow such an evil to
exist. In the book of Habakkuk we can learn of how one man brought his questions
and complaints to God. As we read on we also see where God answers him and
in those answers God brings hope to Habakkuk. God assures Habakkuk that He
is in control of the world despite the apparent triumph of evil.
God wants us to come to Him with our struggles and doubts. His answers may
not always be what we expect but trusting Him leads to quiet hope, not bitter
resignation. As Habakkuk saw his own limitations in contrast to God’s
unlimited control of all the world’s events, we too must trust in what
God is allowing and have that hope that brings us peace. We can not see all
that God is doing, and we can not see all that He will do. But we can be assured
that He is God and will do what is right. Knowing this brings us confidence
and hope in a confusing world.
To learn more about Habakkuk read Habakkuk 1-3 in the
Holy Bible.
